Hello
I have a quick question regarding a compaq presario 5bw137 (celeron coppermine 667) with a i810e chipset. ( I have managed to determine this by verifying the designation on the northbridge) I was wondering if anybody had experience upgrading this to a P3 933-1000 (133fsb). I have not been able to find any definite information on the capabilities of this chipset particulary since it is OEM compaq with a 66fsb celeron. I have searched the faq, previous posts and google and have not found anything to suggest yes or no, especially since many reviews have covered third party manufactures.
Thank You in advance

BTW, this machine is just a secondary

*shudders* i810 series *shudders*

Sorry, but you're going to be limited to 100FSB P3s on there unless you grab yourself a socket adaptor. Not worth upgrading, IMO.

I have to agree with M4H. The best use you make of any i810 setup is as a tax writeoff to use toward your next machine.

its just going to be used on a wireless network for backup and storage
i planned to put xp on it so the celeron is a POS and up the ram from 64 to 256

In general all of Intels own mobo's with the 810e support the 133 mhz bus for p3 up to 933mhz. You would think that there is at least a chance the Compaqs will. However you can check to see if Compaq has a bios update specifically mentioning compatibility. You would see a nice increase going to the p3 933. I have a p3 933 running in an Intel 810e mobo and compared to a celery 633 (i think) I used to have in it the performance seems to be quite a bit faster. I run winxp with office xp, norton av 2003 and zonealarm and with 256mb ram it runs just fine.

On my old Abit BX board a P3-550e (100 MHz FSB) was about 30% faster than a Cel 667 MHz for a compiling C++, so if you can find a cheap P3 700 - 800 at 100 fsb it would still be a nice jump over the 667.

Techs:
I check for the bios update and it mentioned increased support for intel patches but nothing more
however, correct me if im wrong, logically if an 810e can support a p3 (100or 133fsb) natively there should be no need for a bios update even if there is celeron in place
i did some further reading on intels site and there is mention that the i810e set cannot support the lower voltage frequencies of the 133fsb p3 but will a 100fsb
thanks for everyones help

there are some issues that bios updates may be needed for. I didn't see the voltage issue you mentioned. the suggestion by DaveSimmons that you look for a 100mhz fsb p3 would pretty much gurantee no problems. However it many still be possible to use the 133 fsb. maybe you can still buy one with a no penalty return policy?

i used to have that same celeron 667 on a asus tusl2-c mobo, it was the best oc'er i ever had. 950-1GHz it went to.

get a cheap mb and oc.

techs: the voltage issue is important as choosing a tualtin p3 will gaurantee no POST as it draw less than 1.5v as well as the vrm not supporting it
i currently know some people who work in a computer store and ill prorbaly strip a p3 from one of the machines
(i know what ur thinking: why didnt he just ask them about the capabilities of the board? i did but they didnt know)
so anyways thanks for everyones help

That's the best plan. I still think that all the "e"versions support the tualatin with some not going over 933 due to multiplier issues. anyway good luck and please post your results.
