Question regarding ECS K7S5A

Just got a great deal on this board. It is part of a box I am putting together for my folks. I am curious if anyone has opinions on the "on board" sound and "on board" Lan? Anygood? I suppose I can disable these in bios and use a sound and ethernet card of my choice?

IMO, the onboard ac97 sound is decent...it sounded better then my older kt133 board...should be sufficient for average needs...

I have not tried the onboard LAN, but I have seen many rave about it...it is one of the good selling points of this particular baords...


Yes you can diable them simply in the bios and install pci cards in their place...I use an audigy for my sound...

Thanks for the opinion. I am certain the sound will be more then enough for my folks. At their age I dont think they will be listening to many pumping mp3! hehe I was curious about the on board Lan though, I never heard anything about it so I wasnt sure if it was decent or just a throw in to sell the board!

onboard lan works great, i only use a pci sound card cause i had one lying around

I've been using this board for over two months now. I use the onboard sound and lan and have had no problems whatsoever. The sound is adequate and I have a small network here with a minumum of 3 computers running on it at all times. My pc, which has the K7S5A board, is acting as a server for the network to get online. It's never missed a hitch. I'm pleased!

I hear some faint popping noises in the background when listening to Mp3 files... but then again I use high quality headphones, which most people do not with their computer...

If you're an audiophile, you're going to want a better sound card.

My LAN device disappeared (gone from device manager) when I installed a TV tuner card. I had to put in a separate PCI ethernet card.

Recently, my system stopped working altogether with the AGP slot. It only posts with a PCI video card.

I'd say that once a stable configuration has been reached with this board, then everything will be fine. But when you add and remove things, beware!

Onboard LAN works great with my cable modem in both 98 and XP.

Onboard sound in XP is adequate if you run it thru an amp. Sometimes I get pops when opening applications and such, but gaming and multimedia is fine.

Onboard sound lagged by 1/2 a second when running in 98 First Edition, but I don't think it would be a problem in Second Editon because it would use different drivers.

I think not... I recently added the remainder of my pci cards...firewire & ati tv wonder...on top of swapping out old SB PCI512 for an audigy...no problems at all...maybe user is the problem...

You may, like most ppl with any mobo have to play "musical pci slots" to try to avoid irq sharing in win98, 98se, & ME, but that is easy...

This is one of the most inane comments I have read in a while. Let's investigate your logic:

1. MY cards, which are completely different, work on MY system
2. Therefore if a different card causes YOUR system to fail, it's clearly a problem with YOU as a USER

Does that make any sense at all? Let's try to keep this on a professional level. There is no room here for personal attacks. If you have something contructive to say, that's great. But baseless insults will get you nowhere fast.

You made a blanket statement that is summing up or in part trying to stereotype the ecs board as being rather troublesome when adding and removing cards. You statement is not syaing IMO or in my situation, therefore it can be construed as all updates and removals

PPL can always have potential hardware conflicts, but that can happen on any board...

My statement by no means in an insane statement. I have one and have built 4 others and have not had issues adding or removing any cards once I have stability...Whihc in my cases has been stabile since I booted up the computer and began OS installation...

The insult is...you must be dense to not even know what you are writing and then can't understand I am responding as someone saying I have a stable system and never had issues with this board when adding or removing hardware.

Well I put the system together and no problems what so ever! Actually a neat little board that functions pretty darn well. Onboard Lan works great, Onboard sound is so so, more then enough for the folks!

Oooh! Getting a tad bit defensive, aren't we? Are you seriously not mature enough to allow someone to criticize a piece of hardware without taking it as a personal affront to your endorsement of that product?

I made a simple, succinct statement summarizing my experience with the motherboard. I didn't ask your opinion of my experience, now did I? And I certainly didn't ask you to comment on my ability to set up a computer properly, as I'm relatively certain that you don't know me and have no clue what my qualifications may be.

Do you not see how conceited that makes you seem? I admit that I don't know you; perhaps this exchange is but an anomaly and you are normally much more amicable. But why not try to be more civil in your postings? It's just the right thing to do.
