Does it work like a vcr but better? I set it to record @ 8pm-9pm and then from 11-1am (movie i wanna watch), leave for the evening and watch in tomorrow? I dont have to leave my tv on, correct?

you don't have to do anything with the tv
we have the Dish DVR, you just go into the onscreen schedule and find the program you want to record and set it to record either one time or recurring if it is a series

the only bad thing is if it is recording, you can't watch something else live, but you can watch something else that is recorded

ours has a capacity of about 80 hours, so you can keep old stuff for a long time if you want

Tv on is not necessary although if you have a cable box and need the DVR to change channels using the cable box, then you will need to leave the box on. Generally, with a DVR, its not so much about recording a certain time period as it is about recording a show (i.e. 24, Lost, whatever). At least with the Replays and TiVos. It will catch that show whenever it is aired, even if its on at a "special time" (network lingo).

EDIT: Of course, you can set it to manually record a certain time period if you want, just like a VCR.
