Question regarding CZ earrings

So my friend decided to get his ears pierced and told me he's getting these CZ earrings that are like 1 carat.
They are 5mm i think and i told him they would look fake. He says no as long as you dont have them in your hands staring at them then you can tell. is he right? i mean i know they're not real diamonds, but can you really tell in a way where smeone might embarrass you saying they fake?

Instead of CZ get moisanite. Moisanite is the third hardest substance known to man. It doesn't look glassy like CZ but is 1/5-1/10 the price of a real diamond. Just don't get them too big or else you may see a yellowish tinge. Less than 1 carat looks clear.

No one is going to be able to tell with an earring. They might be suspicious if it's so large that people would know he couldn't possibly afford it, though.
