Question regarding changing cell phone providers

Just wondering if anyone has successfully done this. Basically I have a family plan with my gf on Sprint right now. For obvioius reasons, I am changing providers. However, the phones are much cheaper online (say through buy.com) and I want to get the phones that way, then just call up and change the plan. The problem is that I don't know how or see the option for the family plan on buy.com. I can buy one phone on the site and pick a single plan, but there is no option for a family plan. Does anyone know how I can do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

shouldn't you be able to just call after you buy the phone and switch to the family plan?

it also depends on the new provider. for instance on Verizon when you change plans, the contract is renewed/extended when you do.
