Question RE Water Cooling

Hi everyone -

I just purchased a new machine based around an Intel 3820. It's housed inside a Lian Li PC-V355B. Idle temps hover around 55 celsius and under load I'm seeing temps near 90. Needless to say that's way too hot. I'm having trouble finding a water cooling unit that would fit this case and was wondering if anyone knew of any?

Honestly that's an incredibly small unit to fit any watercooling components. I don't know of any that would work in there very well tbh.
 
1) Don't be too impatient. Likely many of the members here are at work and won't even see your question until after they get home.

2) What kind of "load" is it?

3) Is it overclocked?

4) What kind of cooling are you using, and is it sufficient to cool a 130W CPU?

5) You do realize that your case doesn't have much airflow, right? If this is your case then it just has a thin row of vents on the front for intake, and besides the PSU and vented expansion slot blanks, it just has an 80mm fan grill for exhaust.

I don't know of a water cooler that would work with your case without some kind of modification.

May not be what you want to hear since you just bought it, but my #1 solution would be to get a new case that has better airflow, and avoid these "cube" style cases because many of them don't have the best airflow (with a couple exceptions that are no longer on the market).

In the meantime you can try to re-apply the thermal compound and re-mount the CPU cooler to try lowering the temperatures. Also, maybe run the fans faster.

Thanks a lot. I'm looking at the Corsair H80. The case has 2 120mm fans housed in the front. One is directly mounted in front of the HDD cage, the other is relatively unobstructed, but I'm not sure if the height of the radiator might be an issue. If the height is ok, then a single fan config might just work.

The H80 radiator is quite large. Looking at your case, it probably won't fit without modification to the 5.25" bay above the 120mm fan, and possibly only using 2.5" drives (as 3.5" drives might not fit with the H80 in place).


If you don't want to mod, your best bet is to find the best air cooler that can fit and try reapplying the thermal grease as Zap points out.

1 - Didn't mean to rush anyone, was just trying to get some answers as I'll have some time tonight to try a few things out.

2 - Load is running F@Home, 3D Mark 11 and various CPU/GPU benchmarking utilities. Temperatures never pass 86c under stress.

3- No, stock. Lowered vcore a bit as stock 1.4 seems way too high.

4 - Cooling is 2X 120mm fans in front, Dynatron R17 CPU heatsink/fan combo and stock fan in rear.

Understood, thank you. Do you have any recommendations for coolers with this case? I believe the max CPU for this case is 100mm.

If that doesn't help, get a case with better airflow.

I just updated the BIOS to the latest version. I'm using the ASUS Maximus IV Gene board BTW.

Did you reset back to defaults after flashing the latest BIOS? 1.4v is way too high @ stock. It should operate between 0.6 and 1.35. Did you enable an Asus "Dummy OC" or similar?

Also, it's not an upgrade, and probably not worth the money, but the NH-L12 fits in your case and if you use the dual-fan setup, it can handle a 130W TDP load.

Just a comment, you don't pick a WCing setup based on what will fit into your case, you pick based on what components will supply the cooling you need.

Well I guess if another CPU/FAN config gets my temps down, I may try a bit of OC'ing, so I guess the answer to that question would be yes.
 
Rest BIOS to defaults tonight, also lowered vcore from default 1.4v to 1.2v and now temps do not go over 74c. That's almost a 15c drop. I wonder why the vcore is defaulting so high?
 
Does anyone know if I will have to remove the MB if I decided to replace with the NH-L12? Are the backplates the same between CPU coolers or do they differ?

LGA 2011 shouldn't use backplates. If you remember... when you installed your previous cooler, it just bolted straight into the backplate integrated in your motherboard (just from the front). LGA 2011 has its own mounting bolts built in.

You will just screw in some bolts into the front of the motherboard, and then install Noctua's mounting-bar solution.

Also, try decreasing the vCore even more if you're not over clocking. Maybe 1.15? I used to try to decrease vCore to the minimum voltage stable, and then increase it 50 mV (0.05 V)

Thanks. I'll definitely try to decrease the vcore. Are you sure about the install? Everywhere I look the install requires installation of a backplate included with the cooler.

After a few days of testing vCore is stable at 1.175 at stock speeds. Temps under load (Prime95, 3DMark 11, Intel Burn Test etc.) do not go over 64 Celsius. I also ordered the Noctua NH-L12 and will be receiving it tomorrow. Will post back with further results. Thanks to everyone for their input.
