Question RE: TV Tuner

I have a TV tuner that works great. My question is that if you wanted to use one with out cable, could you hook it up to an antenna to get a few selected channels? It should work right? After all it does is tune itself into a certain frequency anyway? Does anyone know for sure? BTW I do not have an antenna to try this out, the reason I'm asking.
