right now i have a e6750 and i was looking at the q8300 and if i got that will i see a performance difference, if not id rather just get more ram and a better cooler like the H50.

what kind of motherboard do you have? whether you stay with the E6750 or go with the Q8300, your singlethreaded performance will be nearly the same. The Q8200 will help you in video encoding, content creation, multitasking and some specific game scenarios such as RTS, but if you have a decent P35 or P45 motherboard you will want to try a ~3.2 GHz overclock or so if you really want to put yourself in the same league as present-day CPUs.

If CPU speed is your real concern, realize that a $70 water cooler is not going to make your system any faster. I would just get a ~$25 heat tower and invest the remaining money into a nicer quad (Q9550) that can go for ~3.7+ GHz only as long as the rest of your system is up for it. If your motherboard is totally unsuitable for overclocking, then your system isn't really worth the trouble. Start planning a platform swap and sell your 775 stuff.

Don't invest any more money into that system. Don't buy any DDR2 or 775 quads, it just isn't worth the money and you are correct that the quads won't work in your board. Your motherboard has some rudimentary overclocking capability, but by modern standards it's kind of crappy. I had an old 680 though and was able to do 440+ FSB with a dual core, so you should still be able to get at least 3.2 GHz out of your E6750 which isn't horrible.

I won't stop you from getting the H50 since that is something that you can take with you when you upgrade, but don't buy any more DDR2. That's just throwing money away. Your CPU should be able to get to 3.2 GHz on the stock cooler, so see what kind of overclocking potential your system has exactly the way it is now before dumping money on a rather expensive and unnecessary water cooler. I would focus on making the system as fast and lean as you can without any extra expenses. Unless there is a specific program that is too slow for you, you should try to get through to the end of the year and then upgrade your CPU-board-RAM at the same time.

yes, 3.2 will be fine. download speedfan and keep an eye on your temps, but 3.2 GHz is very conservative and should be achievable with under 1.35 volts.

you don't have to run an extensive battery of stability tests, I just want to make sure your motherboard is worth a damn before you throw $70 away on an expensive cooler before we even know if your system is overclockable. If your system posts at 3.2, 3.4, 3.5 GHz, then congratulations because you are really getting your money's worth out of that nforce. then I would get the new cooler.

that thuban+880 combo is a hell of a deal. There are similar promos going on at other stores. If you want to buy that and forget about overclocking your old machine you have my full support.

what games do you play? what resolution do you play at? how much RAM do you have? 2 gigs?

your 260 is fine for 1680x1050 though. at least in those games. try and get your CPU over 3 GHz and just wait for next-gen parts at the end of the year. like i said earlier: is there something specific that is too slow for you?

You can put an upper bound on your temps if you just go ahead and manually set your CPU voltage to 1.325v to prevent any automatic/accidental overvoltage. Any speed you can get stable with that vcore is totally safe (if your case is filthy, clean it).

edit: yeah those duals really don't get hot until they are pushed. what is your RAM running at?

make sure your auto vcore wasn't too high at 3.2 GHz. see what cpu-z says. you should be able to do 3.2 ghz with near stock volts, even if you idle in the 40's that's ok. see how high you can go with less than 1.30 volts.

GTA4, crysis, the new stalker games, etc were some that I were hoping you wouldn't mention. These games do like big CPUs, but I just can't recommend you getting a 65nm quad for your board and I certainly can't recommend a new board + 45nm quad. with the exception of thuban and lynnfield, all of your "upgrade" options will disappoint you, so I would just go for your highest possible overclock and wait for bulldozer and sandy bridge.
