Yesterday I went to the local Mazda dealer because they finally got some '07 Mazda 3's. I ended up talking with the salesman about the 3 I want. They will have to order it, no big deal. He says, we put the order in, I  put down $250 to hold the car, in about 90 days I'll have my car. Sounds great.

So, I tell him what I want (GT, Moonroof/stereo upgrade, Manual transmission, color: Aurora Blue). He goes to get a price from his manager. Comes back about 10 minutes later and says that the manager wants $1,000 down because he does not what that color on his lot, if I back out on purchasing it. So, I'm like, WTF? I guess all they order is Gray and black  :?

I know $1k isn't a lot, but $250 I can just give them. With $1k, I'll have to transfer some money out of savings (which is earmarked for my parent's 38th anniversary), and all that crap. It just makes it a hassle.

Is this normal? There are 2 other dealers in this area, should I go talk with them?

Why can't they make a trade with a different dealer, for the car you want? I work at a dealership and we do it all the time.
Once they have the VIN# they can contract you, doing all the paperwork, to where the only thing left for you to do is take delivery, when the car arrives

Screw those guys and go somewhere else. 90 days is too long to let anybody hold my money anyway.

not that i'm suggesting what they are doing is ok, but if it's a deposit and you don't buy the car, aren't they supposed to give it back anyways?

You get to pick EXACTLY what car you want with EXACTLY what options you want.

If they won't do this, then go to a different dealer.

they're blowing smoke up your arse. They are the one that puts the order in, the line makes the car to your desires, done. don't let them pull this crap on you.

If you don't like the deal, shop elsewhere. They can ask for any amount of downpayment they want.

Heh.. typical Mazda dealer bullsh!t. My local dealer here gave me so much crap even though I was a 4-time Miata buyer. They had the gall to tell me my latest Miata was out of warranty, and they argued with me on it for 30 minutes! I bought the car new only 23 months before. 3 yr/36K miles... I had 11K on it.

Finally had to call Mazda's HQ and they told me I was right and they called up the dealership and ripped them a new one. They were nice to me after that.

So if I were you... tell that dealership (or rather the manager guy) to go eff himself with something spiky.
