Question over SETI Times

Running seti 3.03 (graphical) on my t-bird 1000@1200. Running on a the standard 100mhz ddr bus. What kind of seti times should I see? I've got next to nothing running in the background and after 7 hours I'm 26% done with my first block! My last box (PII-400) took about 35 hrs to do one block and it looks like with my new processor runing 3x the cpu speed and 2x the bus speed that it will take about the same amount of time... not sure what to think here... all other benchmarks on par with the class of system that I'm using. I can't believe that switching to the text SETI will speed things up that much! There's got to be something I'm missing here... does the first block always take a long time? OH well... any suggestions greatly appreciated. I thought I'd be tearing through these blocks! Thanks

Wow, that's bad! 🙁 Given what we know so far about the 3.03 vs. 3.0 client's speeds and relative processor speeds, it's (somewhat) possible that a t-bird will do a 3.03 WU in the time a PII-400 (like the one I use) takes to do a 3.0 WU. However, my PII-400 does a 3.0 WU in only about 9.5 hours.

My first suggestion would be to turn off the graphics. They use about half of SETI's CPU time. But your speed is about 1/4 what it should be on the PII (unless you used the 3.03 client there.) Have you verified that nothing else is taking up much CPU time, with some kind of task manager or monitor? Here's one if you need one.

Searingblu: Those times sound WAAAAY off for such a fast machine. I'm using the 3.03 Command Line client and I've got a P2-350 doing WU's in about 14hr 30min. My P3-700 @ 1000 does WU's well under 6 hours. I know the GUI client is a little slower but not anywhere near that much. Are you running the GUI client with the SETI screen saver active? If so, go into the screen saver properties and set it to "blank screen" after 0 or 1 minutes. If you display the screen saver graphics you will more than double your processing time. Even if you're not using the SETI screen saver if you're using another one that takes up a lot of processor time (any of the 3D ones) it will severely impact your process time. Try setting your screen saver to "none" and see how fast you process your next WU.

Good luck and welcome!

When I run seti@home v.303 GUI version on my 900MHz duron, i get times around 9-10 hours.
They are pretty consistent in that interval...

So with your machine, I would expect 8.5-9.5 hours per unit.

Set screen blanker to 0 minutes, and follow the advice below..

Above even! 😛😉

Are you in Team Anandtech? I did a search on tyour name & couldn't find you listed.

Nope, I'm not using any screen saver and just as a test the other night I turned off all background programs and opened the client and went to bed. Next morning it was at 7 hrs and 24% I just about died, can't figure out why its running so slow. I didn't mention earlier that I have Win98SE and this is a clean (as in less than 30 hrs ago installatioin)... I'm gonna poke around and see if there's any tweaking I should be trying. Anyway thanks for the help

"opened the client"

sounds like you're drawing the graphics, just without using the screensaver. set it to run all the time, then never look at it.
