question on windows domain logons

i setting up someone's laptop who used it to logon at work to their domain controller there. he wanted to hook it up to his roadrunner at home.

here was another weird problem with it

I was using the administrator account to change settings.
the owner was logging on w/o a network connection to the domain:

username: john doe
passwd: xxxxxxxxx
domain: WORK DOMAIN

he did this all the time w/o being connected to the network.

after I got done with it. he can't logon to the domain anymore. only to the local computer.
he gets a "domain unavailable error" message which he never got before.

BTW I've been trouble shooting over the phone with him so this is second hand.

What am I missing here?

Is it a Windows 2000 domain?

Because then it NEEDS a DNS server to find a DC (and the domain itself)

did you configure them manually? or is everything just DHCP?

AHHHHH!

I wiped his old ip addresses and dns info in order to hook him up to roadrunner (needed dhcp)

how could I fix it using dhcp? (if possible)
