Sup... I just got my hands on some sweet 'leftovers' from work. I took home three Seagate Baracuda 7200 rpm 9 gigers with a meg of cache, and two scsi cards. One is the adaptec AAA131 raid card, the other is a 2940UW. Both of these are UW cards, 40Meg a sec. My old drive is a WD 6.4 (no laughing) and thats all. My old 1.6 gig died a week ago. So sad after 6 years with her. Anyway, back to topic... The AAA raid card doesnt have any goddam Windows 2000 support!!!!! Pisses me off. Its either Novell (ehhhh) or NT, I have no probs w/NT, but not worth the switch... So, I figure the best setup would be to continue using my 6.4 IDE drive as my boot disk w/ Win98 on FAT32 for old game support, and put 2000 on the three SCSI drives in a software raid. I was considering doing something like one drive for the OS, split the swap file over the three drives, apps on third, etc... but thats so complicated... Figured the software raid would do the best job of maximizing all drives at the same time. True, I only have 40m/s of bandwidth to play with, but at least it will be maxed at all times, and definetely faster than IDE... What have you all heard or done with this software raid business? Any good? I tested it out when I had nothing on the drives and it seems to work well. Here is the real question though... HOW DO YOU GET A WIN2K INSTALLATION ONTO THE SOFTWARE RAID?!?!?! Like I said, I have 98 on the IDE drive, which is my boot drive, but how to get it set up on the 2000 install? Once 2000 is on one of the scsi drives, you cant touch it!?! The windows help is useless (suprise) so Im hoping you all can help me out... If youve made it this far, thanks and sorry for the lenght of this ramble...
