I have a Western Digital 80GB SE 8MB cache hard drive that has the 3 year warranty. I bought it over xmas break and I think it's already having problems. I am ordering parts for a new computer and want to use this hard drive. Here is the problem I'm having...
I have my WD hard drive as master along with another hard drive as slave on my primary IDE port and my DVD drive and CDRW on my secondary IDE port. In the past few days I've been getting lock ups w/o BSOD and when I restart it sometimes won't find my hard drives during boot up but it will find my ROM drives. I tried switching ports and putting the hard drives on secondary and the ROM drives on primary to see if that was it but the ROM drives still showed up and the hard drives wouldn't from time to time. Also, sometimes one hard drive would show up and one wouldn't. Yesterday I was using internet explorer with the slave hard completely inactive and I heard a clicking noise and my computer eventually locked up. I restarted and the clicking noise started again and the hard drives weren't found.
I have no way to swap out any other parts to check and there is something wrong with my floppy drive so I can't make a bootdisk to test the hard drive. I feel it has to be the WD drive going bad, correct? However, I removed the ROM drives and am running the WD drive as the only drive on my primary port and the other HD as the only drive on my secondary port. I used the comp like this for roughly an hour today with internet explorer with no problems.
To make a long story short, I don't want all my parts to get here and set up my new comp only to have this WD drive that I wanted to carry over go out on my. Is trying to RMA it now okay? Or do I have to wait until it goes out completely? Could something else be wrong?
