We've been trying to set up a stable video editing station for editing DVDs (promo ones we made, not illegal copying, etc...) and other general video editing stuff (some high res video up to 2048x1024 for custom stuff). We've tried using the Matrox RT10Xtra editing card, and it was very nice for editing DVD resolution footage in Premiere 6.5 with the real time rendering and real time transitions. At least it was real nice for the 2 to 3 minutes before it hard-froze the system.
We first tried it on a KT400 based AMD motherboard, then switched to an SIS 745 based chipset motherboard as that was what Matrox recommended, however that didn't make any difference. We might try it in an Intel system, but then again we've never had very good luck with Matrox as far as software stability goes. A bunch of people on their forums had similar issues with the card, but what helped them didn't help us.
So anyways, I'm wondering what people here are using for video editing? We wouldn't mind getting a more expensive (in the range of $500 to $800) if the feature set was useful and it was non-problematic. We've also just thought about spending the extra into putting together a nicer system to put it on, maybe a P4 with a 865/875 based mobo, and getting a decent video in/out card with no extra bells and whistles.
Here's what we NEED:
DV in
NTSC in/out
Here's what would be really nice:
DV Out
Real time editing in Premiere
Hardare support for 720x480 video (NTSC/DVD resolution)
Hardware support for resolutions exceeding 720x480
Any suggestions?
