Hi all,
Excuse the noob question but I bought a used Radeon 8500 64MB video card recently. While installing the card I had issues with XP Pro not wanting to set up a standard VGA driver and the ATI driver would not work without it. After doing some reading, it appeared that this was a common problem. I had uninstalled the Geforce2 that I had in the computer but after downloading a couple cleaning programs(driver cleaner and Regcleaner) I did find some remnants of the Nvidia card. I still had issues getting the card installed though.
I ran across this message on Nvidia's website and was wondering if I should reverse it since I have the card running now. This is what they recommended to do when you get a "data is invalid" when installing a device driver in Win2000...
run regedt32
go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SYSTEM\currentControlSet\ENUM\PCI
Highlight PCI and click on security option
Highlight the SYSTEM entry and make sure "Allow" is selected for both full control and Read
Select the "Advanced" button and in the "Advanced Control Settings" view, make sure that "Reset permission entries on all child objects..." IS selected, and that "Allow inheritable permissions is NOT selected.
By doing this, did I do anything that would hurt the computer in any way? I have never did much with registry editing since I had heard that it can really mess things up.
Thanks for helping a noob
