Question on Toll Roads ....

Reading down that list, I see a number of entries like this one for I-10 and I-15 in CA:

All-electronic toll; must have FasTrak


OK, that may work for locals, but what about tourists from out of state that may only drive that route once in their lifetime?

I'll never complain about EZ-Pass again.... the account/transponder I have currently is Mass-based but is usable in any state that supports it for tolls and many parking-areas. (although in NYC for example you lose out on any discounts unless you use a "NY" TBA transponder.

Same with Mass and NYS .... the law referenced by the OP however reads like you only get ONE penalty-free toll unless you make an account and give them a credit card otherwise they'll add a penalty-fee on top?

True, sounds a little more annoying there though it says you have 5 days to pay your tolls so I don't think you have to worry about a violation after just one. Reminds me a bit of the system in IL except here I think you have 7 days to pay online after a missed toll. I've waited longer than that before though and nothing happened, from a lot of anecdotal evidence I think they don't really do much unless you rack up a lot of violations.

They've even got it sorted out so that if you're driving a rental, you pay for the tolls.

Much improved over when E-470 still had meatbags accepting tolls, IMO.

Matter of fact, years back, I got the MA one being from/in NY because there was no monthly fee ($1) at the time that NY was charging for upkeep.

NY doesn't charge a monthly fee anymore so I got a legit one here now.

EZPass is great. Even took it on our trip to Chicago a couple times. It's compatible with their system.

IPass is the IL one, it is really nice that it works with EZPass since it seems like every state east of us uses it (think Iowa might use it too).

Definitely, they've mostly gotten rid of toll operators in IL too which makes things a lot nicer. Only toll that's still a huge PITA is the Chicago Skyway one, it's pretty easy to avoid though which is good since it's like over $7 now IIRC.

The two you referenced are "managed lanes" which means only certain lanes are Fast Trak. Generally one lane possibly two, on the far left.
Fast Trak only means you have to have a Fast Trak transponder to use those lanes. No other method of payment is used.
The other lanes are what the non-fast trak people use.
I commuted for years with the availabilty of Fast Trak lanes, but never used them.

i rented a car from hertz in florida and took some toll roads down there

the license readers charged hertz and then hertz passed the charges to me (plus a 2.5$ "convenience" fee per day that i used toll roads)

Yes, just the way the state likes it. Defaulting means payday for the masters.

Yes, but the toll roads are nowhere I ever want to go, or have a need to go... Closest one in my state is Durham, NC... uh no.

will i get all the toll discounts for all states using iPass?

ie: I drive a few times a year between MD and NY.
There are tolls in MD, Delaware, NJ, and NY.

I currently have a NY EZ-Pass because money saved from the Verazono bridge is greater than all the savings from any other state in my list.
