Question on these Dell servers in Hot Deals.

I've got a few questions before i order. I'm looking at the 2.4ghz P4 w/ some SCSI drives to replace my server 🙂

Couple questions though. Is the PS proprietary? I'm curious if down the road if i wanted to replace the motherboard (for AGP reasons), will i have a problem with the connector. Or can i just throw in another PS in it's place? Or does it use an odd size and such.

Also can the ECC memory be ran with non ECC. I know some motherboards just reduce the ECC to non ECC if non ECC is present w/ the ECC.

My guess would be to say that nothing on the server is proprietary except for maybe the case.

Dell doesn't develop their own stuff, as far as I know. They only rebadge other people's stuff.

Dell power supplies are almost always proprietary. So are Dell's case connections to the motherboard, at least every desktop Dell that I have ever seen was.

So they don't use a standard ATX power supply?

Deal doesnt end till the 26th, thats why im trying to figure things out right now.

I'm not sure about the PS, thats why i'm wondering. I've heard they were proprietary before, but that was more about desktops.

Ok another question that someone might know..

It appears that you can the Single Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, 2.4GHz and above OR Single Intel Celeron processor, 1.8GHz and above. This is more a question out of curiosity. Does the Celeron 1.8 use the same slocket as the p4? I mean is the pin configuration the same and the chips are interchangeable??

The deal is not dead. The HOT deal is dead. I lost out today.

Dell's stuff is 99% proprietary. That doesn't mean it's bad, it just means it's not interchangeable w/other manufacturer's stuff. 🙂 Down the road, you could cannabilize it for the CPU/memory/HDs. Come to think of it, that's what 99% of the people that got in on the deal will be doing to theirs, NEXT WEEK. 😱

ps
It's still a good deal for what you get. You couldn't build a system w/those exact parts for even close to what Dell is offering it for. That type mobo alone is a $300 piece.

I'm confused on why they are saying the "hot deal" is dead. I can still get the $100 off, the 2nd HD for free, and %15 off. Is there something else i'm missing?

Yeah, about 8 hours ago, it was $250 less. THat's the HOT part of the deal that's missing. Basically, you were getting a SCSI drive genuinely for free. Most folks (I know one, at least...) were planning on selling that extra drive...then the server would cost about $300 period. 🙁

that cable scheme on the psu is different, so u can't just plug it into any other mobo without getting ur hands dirty.
