Question on the Plextor PX712a

I have an option to pick up one of these for cheap through a local hardware store. I was wondering how this thing performs.

Ive also heard that some Single Layer burners can be flashed to be able to burn Dual Layer's. Is this burner a flashable one? It would be nice to know whether this burner is flashable, if its a good burner, flashing possibilities would be a nice bonus.

I have one now and it works excellent. I have never burned a coaster in many DVDs and over 50 cds. I would definitely recommend. If you want dual layer you might look at the 716 SA, I say SA (serial ata) because right now newegg is having an awesome sale for them and they are dual layer. But it does not need to be sata to be dual layer by any means.

Thanks for the info but Newegg isnt what Id call local. Over 5000 miles away Id guess. Still, most appreciated.

I don't have any complaints. I haven't burned a ton of discs, but considering I've only had the drive for a little less than a month, it's been rock solid, even with cheap media. Also, as of now it cannot be flashed to a dual layer burner.

I have a 712A and so far so good. I have burned four different DVD media with success: Sony 4x -R, TDK 8x +R, Newegg (Ridata) -R, and the blank that came with the drive +R (might be Verbatim/Mitsubishi) - and four CD-R media: Imation 16x, Fuji (TY) 48x, TDK 48x, Maxell 52x. I always try to burn at least one step down from the max rating of the media - never over the rating.
. Currently there is a $30. rebate on the 712A, 716A and some other things in the US making it somewhat of a bargain - still waiting for mine, mailed at the end of October and overdue now.
