Before I make the purchase (BEFSR41 4-Port Cable/DSL Router), I need to know whether I can play online games with my computers simultaneously with my single IP cable connection split via this router.

i've heard something about DMZ (de-militarized zone?) on only 1 port which has no firewall protection, and that's the only one that can play... the others are just limited to browsing..

basically i just want to know if i can play Q3/counter-strike with all 3-4 of my computers online, at the same time, in the same server, thru my cable connection shared with the linksys router. im not doing anything fancy with hosting a game... just playing with my several computers at the same time in the same server.

thanks

It depends on the game. Most multiplayer games require access to specific ports on your computer. Since you have a single IP, the games cannot have 4 simultanous port 9900 (example)open on the same IP. One unique port number per IP (but several different ports per IP is possible) So if your buddies and you all need port 9900 open, then only one of you will actually get to play online. The rest of you won't connect. You may be able to specify a different port number for each player which would resolve this conflict. This is true for all routers not just the linksys. The true solution is to get more than one IP address.

I've tried to get starcraft and UT to play simultaneously on two or more computers online and it just won't fly. One player yes, two or more no.
