for example looking at and athlon 64 X2 you can get a CPU with a manchester core or toledo core

what makes them different/better than one another? and where does one go to find out this info?

i was wondering the same about chipsets on motherboards (there are so many to choose from yet new egg doesn't give any info as to what the features are) but perhaps ill post that in the motherboard forum

For the most part:

Machester = 2x 512k cache. 3800+, 4200+, 4600+

Toledo = 2x 1mb cache. 4400+, 4800+

oh, the core names only have to do with the specs on the CPU?

Basically.

Those 2 cores are specific to the X2 series. They're for the different cache's on the CPU's. The same way that the Venice/San Diego are from the same "series" of CPU's, but Venice = 512k, and San Diego = 1mb.

ok thank you, that makes it a lot more clearer. i thought they had a bit more meaning, on newegg and other places you can usually see the specs anyway

do you know much about chipsets on motherboards?

Yeah, what do you need to know?

on newegg, you can search through the motherboards based on chipsets, im wondering what makes an nvidia different compared to something like SiS (looking at it now it looks like that's mainly video chipsets) but i wont be getting one with onboard video anyway

so what about the south bridge differences

a lot on this page seem to be VIA, but whats the difference in the model numbers? do you just have to google each one?

*edit* i guess this question would be the same for the north and south bridge
