Question on the Asus K7V

I am looking to buy the K7V but i don't know whether to buy the one with the built in sound or the one without. i see the price difference is about $5 but i already have a SB Live sound card. is it worth it to get the board with the sound built in or should i just save my money? if i get the one with sound, can i still install my SB Live?

I would get the one without sound. The integrated sound is for OEM computer manufacturers so they don't need a soundcard to sell the system. If you have a soundcard, the integrated sound is useless and you will just have to disable it.

If you already have an SB Live!, then it should be a no-brainer...

BUT...

There is something else you should consider. I've got the ASUS K7V with no sound, but it is also missing the onboard temp/fanspeed/other monitoring features.

I'm presuming ASUS is making two versions, one with onboard sound and onboard monitoring features, and one without either of those features...

If that is the case, then you have to ask yourself the question is monitoring features worth the extra five bucks?

OTOH, I could be all wrong and perhaps ASUS does make boards with no integrated audio but with integrated hardware monitoring features...

Check if you have hardware monitoring in the bios. To see the hardware monitoring in windows you have to install the Asus probe software that can be found on the installation cd (can also be dl:ed I think).

RentaCow, same problem here, i can not see any cpu temperature on my bios (N/A) however i can get my mobo temperature here!!!

I built my system a few months ago just when the K7V came out. I waited and waited then found one available with the sound. I didn't want the sound but I was impatient. I also had a SB live plat waiting to be plugged in. When I got the mobo and assembled the whole schmear all I had to do was disable the audio in the bios and that was that. I had a hard time desiding if I wanted to keep the onboard audio enabled or use my SB live Platnium with Cambridge 2500 digital surround speakers......NOT. The way I figure it...if my SB craps out...I can plug some crappy speakers into the onboard audio and satisfy my ears.
