Question on the 80GB PS3

I have been searching around a lot and apparently people cannot decide as to which model (SKU) features the BC. From what I have read and heard from friends and trusted sources, the newer 80GB model (the one I bought today) will play most PS2 games and all PS1 games.

Can someone tell me which models have the BC and which do not? Backing your statement up with some sort of official press release from Sony would help solidify your argument and would be greatly appreciated. The Sony website refuses to load due to my roommates downloading and playing WoW as I keep getting a "Your Connection Has Reset" message when I try to load the page.

The older 80 GB had software BC for PS2 games. The newer 80 GB has no BC for PS2 games. All PS3s have PS1 BC.

Gee, who could have seen this confusing customers when Sony decided to release the newer 80 GB model?

Finally got the Sony webpage to load and it looks like my model is not BC. However, their "Search by Title" said otherwise, so due to that contradiction, I went ahead and e-mailed them. When I receive a reply, I shall paste it here.

why don't you go ahead a show the misinformation atleast in terms for the retail configs of the ps3?

You realize the same table info can be found on the playstation website right?

Can posting ignorant information by considered a lie? Say you heard something through a chain of extremely reliable sources about the Wii only to watch a press conference with Nintendo and hear them say the exact opposite of what you have been told. All I'm saying is that I have been hearing a lot of indecisiveness over three different forums and it would be much better to just ask the company who produces the damn thing as opposed to try and decipher what people are saying.

Secondly, if you ever try to use wikipedia for any type of serious research, then I can only laugh. Sure some of the information is reliable, but then again, it is all user submitted. You could have one article written by someone with a PHd and then the article directly below it be posted by a high school student. I used to alter a lot of information on wikipedia during my high school days when I was bored and I can guarantee that I was no expert on half of the shit I posted.

Also, during my entire college career, I have been told (though I don't see why it is necessary when you hit college) never to cite Wikipedia for any reason other than to mock it. During my fifth year, two of my roommates were English majors and were selected to assist in reviewing freshmen term papers before being submitted to the English department for final review. They were both instructed to fail any paper that had wikipedia cited in it and after reading the papers of those who had cited it, I can understand why.

If you are one of those people who wants to know something and immediately logs onto wikipedia to find the answer, then I feel extremely sorry for you. It should be a fairly difficult process when someone comes along and bursts all your little bubbles of ignorance.

You're making things more complicated than it has to be. The wiki page linked has all the info you want to know with the models and dates. Your friends don't know shit about PS3 models, and your trusted sources might as well be telling you the holocaust never happened. Here are the facts. Sony doesn't manufacture new BC models anymore and the only way you can get a BC PS3 is by buying a refurb 60GB unit through gamestop. That's all you need to know.

Ps. You talk too much, nobody gives a fuck what you learned in college. You're one paranoid sob you know that? If you don't trust the replies on this thread, why did you even make a thread in the 1st place?

Yeah, whatever... I wouldn't call figuring out which PS3 models are PS2 BC "serious research". This is EXACTLY the kind of info for which I would think Wikipedia is a perfectly acceptable source. Make all the excuse and claims of ignorance you want, but Wiki is 100% correct in regards to the information you were looking to find.

I didn't know that looking up whether the 80gb ps3 you just bought has ps2 backwards compatibility was serious research.

You know what I wouldn't trust some reply from some sony csr. Might be some third world employee looking it up wikipedia. Here's what I think you should do. Call Sony directly and ask to speak to their CEO Howard Stringer. Do not let them transfer you to marketing or anyone else for that matter.

Report back to us when you get the answer.

Remember, Howard Stringer and no one else.

While I agree Wikipedia is generally full of crap, this is a situation in which EVERYONE is getting their info from it, so asking a question of your peers will always get the same results.

Also, I'd like to take this opportunity to say you should all invest in a Slimline and keep it in reserve.

Frankly its worth 83 dollars to not have to get a special version of the PS3. Who knows how much money you could waste getting multiple PS3's that you dont even want?

Wow, you're an asshole. He did give you reliable information, you just don't want to believe it.

The last 80 GB model to support PS2 backwards compatibility was the MGS4 80 GB Bundle. If you didn't buy that one (or an old Motostorm 80 GB Bundle), then your PS3 can't play PS2 games. There was also the original launch 60 GB, which has full hardware PS2 compatibility, but those would be rare to find.

There...is that simple enough?

As others, I am perplexed why you came here, asked a question, received the correct answers, then got hostile at the folks who provided the information. Wikipedia is generally pretty reliable for simple, fact-based stuff such as this.

The OP must really hate Google; all those "faulty" links to "incorrect information" on Wikipedia.

I must have been really lucky when I reviewed the Dell Monitor page there and verified the model of the dipslay I needed to get for my GF. Weird how Wikipedia had more information about Dell's monitors than Dell does. Plus, it was organized in a great table too.

If "serious research" is finding a BC PS3, this guy must have majored in "underwater basketweaving" in college. :p

Agreed. If you are so mistrusting of the internet, why in the hell are you posting on a message board asking random strangers for the answer?

Methinks the OP has been shunned enough, even if he was a jerk now we've just got random people posting the same thing over and over...

The 60GB PS3 also happens to play SACDs, which may be a consideration for some people. That's one piece of hardware versus three if you have a non-BC PS3, a PS2, and an SACD player.

Me too.

I find it hilarious that so many people get pissed off when someone bashes wikipedia.

Oh, and I finally got a straight answer directly from Sony. After finally being able to load the Sony webpage when my roommates went to sleep, I noticed that their drop-down title selection contradicts their chart that lists the SKU in regards to BC. After bringing it to their attention, I received an answer to my inquiry.

Feel free to keep mocking me, though. I have not had a good laugh like this in a while.

You forgot to mention that the the answer you received from Sony is the same answer you received several times in this thread.

The problem isn't that you bashed Wikipedia. The problem is that you came here, asked a question, received the correct answer to your question, and you complained about the answer.

It was chaoticpenguin that made me laugh because of his ignorance to the truth we dealt him.
