Question on Sveasoft Firmware for WRT54G

I just recently picked up a Linksys WRT54G router. I've been doing some reading on the forums, and saw that there is a firmware flash for this router, as well as the speedbooster model, that basically makes it into a commercial router.

The thread in hotdeals has become grossly overgrown, so I figured I would ask my question here. I have a v2.2 router, but I can't seem to find anything that says I can flash this router. The firmware link in the other thread takes me to a v4.xx firmware, and explicitly says not to flash v2.2 routers. Is there a newer version that I am not seeing, or do I just have to wait a while until the newer routers are able to be flashed?

Thanks.

I don't think there are many firmwares that "officially" support the 2.2 yet. I think I read that they HyperWRT firmware should be compatible, but don't quote me on that.

What feature is it that you are looking for that isn't included in the stock firmware?

When I first got my router, I was considering the updated firmwares, but it worked so great out of the box, I haven't messed with it yet.

I am using the HyperWRT on mine. It works great + is compatable with the new versions. The firmware is based on the original, so it is very close to the Linksys. The only reason I upgraded was to +++ the signal to work in the garage.

The main feature I wanted to try was to boost the signal a bit, and I really just wanted to try it for the heck of it. I don't have a need for any other features past stock, I just wanted to see what others have been able to hack out of it.

Hrmm, does the Sveasoft firmware (or other firmware releasers) have improved filtering options (content filtering/parental control by domain blocking, word filter, etc.)? Linksys' default firmware isn't so good at that. :(

EDIT: Oh man, I didn't mean to threadjack, sorry rmrf. I had several threads open about the WRT54G and I meant to post this question in the big long thread.

^ NP.

I decided to set my router up as my main router, instead of just using it as a wireless only. I am having a problem with the port forwarding. I have DHCP on, and it is working fine, but when a lease is up on my client machine and renews, it grabs a different IP. This is a pretty big problem, because I have my webserver behind this router, and it renders it useless every 40,000 seconds when the lease renews. Is there any way to fix this, so that the lease time is longer, or infinite, or so that the IP of this machine will always stay the same?

set it up with a static IP. Did you use the sveasoft firmware? Let me know, i have remote access to both stock and satori firmware routers. One of the satori units has my freebsd mail and webserver behind it with a static IP assignment.

No, I have not used the sveasoft firmware yet. I tried setting my server up with a static IP, but when I did that, it was like the router didn't recognize it outside of the local network, meaning the ports were not forwarded.

Is the satori a sveasoft based firmware, or is it on it's own?

satori is the release of sveasoft that was "free"
I have another server set up with a static IP and stock firmware, and it works fine. I assign an address outside of the dhcp pool, and forward the protocols I want in the "applications & gaming" tab.
For example, the standard DHCP pool on those routers is from .100 to .149
I set the server at .10, and then forward the ports as necessary.
In the sveasoft firmware, you can make static assignments with the MAC address.

Yeah, I tried setting is outside of the pool, but for some reason, it would not let me access it from the outside. I could get to it fine from the LAN, but anything coming in on the WAN it wouldn't do. I tried using the access restrictions to set it up so that the MAC of my server had access 24/7 to everything possible, but that is the closest I could get to "static" assignments. It looks like I'll just have to reflash it to one of the hacked firmware's to get the functionality I want.

Will the satori firmware work on the v2.2, or will I have to use the HyperWRT until another release of satori comes out?

The HyperWRT firmware did not have the ability to assign IP based on MAC address last time I checked. That is only in the Sveasoft firmwares.

Thanks. I guess I'll just have to wait until later this month to try the newest sveasoft firmware.

wow. I have no problems with the stock firmware, and forwarding using the "applications & games" section.

is it possible that I have a defective router, or maybe just need to reflash the stock firmware with stock to see if it resolves itself? I like the router, but one of the main reasons I keep going back to my speedstream 2624 router is the fact that I can specify which computer I want to forward the ports to, rather than an IP address. This is good, because if the address on the address happens to change, it won't screw up my forwarding.

I just realized that I really didn't make it clear on what IP address changes. I have a static IP address, so the only one's changing are the one on the LAN. Not sure if that was confusing to anyone or not. Anyways, if I could get similar behavior from the linksys as my speedstream, I would be in good shape, but I just don't trust the linksys enough to make it my main router.

The stock firmware does not support assigning IP adresses by computer (MAC). That is one of the reasons that I have considered the Sveasoft firmware. I just haven't done it yet.

I have download this file:

WRT54G.Sveasoft.Firmware.Alchemy_6rc5_by_TheIndividual.zip

Does anyone know whether or not this will work with the v2.2 router? In the release notes, it says that the v2.2 is supported, but everywhere else I have read, indicates that there has not been a release that supports this version of the router.

alright, well I got impatient and installed the firmware that I listed above. This went fine, so apparently the v2.2 router is supported. however, I do not see anywhere to specify where to list PC's with static IP's, or assign a MAC with a certain IP via DHCP.

does anyone have any familiarity with the above firmware? I would appreciate any insight as to whether or not this is at all possible. if not, I guess I will just have to use my speedstream :(

the static DHCP option is under the administration tab.

find DHCPD.
then in the empty next to enter the IP MAC Hostname

for e.g

1.1.1.1 00:00:00:00:00:00 funny

you can give any host name

click on save settings

I have WRT54G v2, and I just updated my firmware to Satori 4.0, but now my wireless network is displayed as being non-secure even though I have WPA-PSK enabled. And I can connect to the router without any password key. Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this?
Thanks!

Alchemy 6rc5 has been running fine on my 2.2 router for about a month now. I have VOIP, and I wonder if the QOS in 6rc5 is good enough.... Voice quality gets choppy sometimes. even when my network isn't being used for other things.
