Question on splitting rent

Mo0o

Lifer
So 3 BR apt. 4 people living in it. 2 people in one room, 1 person in 1 and another person in the 3rd room. how should rent be divided? Does the 2 person room just share 1/3 of the rent? Or is it split 4 ways?

I don't know if the 2-in-1 should pay 1/3 but they should get a break. You all have to share the common areas so it's not that simple. When I had two roommates in a 3BR I had the bigger bedroom with my own bathroom and I paid slightly more.

yeah I actually have the bigger room w/ my own bathroom and I'm paying 30 more a month.

split 4 ways. Just cause they share the same bed doesn't mean that they don't use 2x more of everything else.

Agreed. The 2 in 1 pay less, but they should not be paying 1/3 because they share common areas and facilities. Thus the combined amount they pay should be greater than the other 2 who have their own rooms but the amount each pays should be less obviously.

30-30-20-20 is a good way to work it.

I don't believe in splitting it 4 ways evenly. It's hell to share a room and it's totally different when you have your own. They deserve a break for sure but just not too much.

I wouldn't want an even split in that situation. The private room folks are getting the benefit of privacy. They should pay a bit for it. Or be willing to trade rooms. My last shared apartment had three bedrooms of different sizes. My roomies and I negotiated BEFOREHAND* to get a rent split that we were all happy with.

*Always do these things beforehand. Make sure everyone is happy with the deal.
