Question on snow tires.

I have a 2003 mazdaspeed protege 215/45/17 size tires currently on them.
They are street tires and are horrible in the snow, so I'm looking to buy
some snow tires. I found some Blizzaks in the same size however, I'm
concerned with the performance difference with the low profile tire. Should
I buy 15" rims to go along with a set of winter tires? Or do you think just
getting the same tire size in the snow tire will be sufficient? Thanks.

Just buy some cheap, ugly, steel rims [full size spare style] and get snow tires on them. The effect will be twofold - first, you can swap to your hi-perf tires in minutes (if you're good and/or have a pit crew). Second, nobody will EVER steel your car in the winter.

Edit: And make sure the rims DON'T MATCH and at least one is painted some stupid color like red.

All black rims but the one off color should be orange. Get it right man!

Isn't your car front wheel drive? Oh, and where do you live? Depending on where you are, front wheel drive should suffice.

I live in SE Michigan. Yes, the car is FWD, but it is the worst car I have ever driven in the snow. Way worse than my '85 Trans Am that I used to have, at least that would go forward in a dusting.

i've got those on my honda.. i love driving in the snow now.. had it for 4 years now...

I bought one of the wheel and snow tire packages at Tirerack. When the winter comes, I just swap out the wheels, no hassles.

Yeah, I'd say just get some plain jane wheels and have the tires put on them.

I know that the smaller wheels with less width and thicker sidewall will make some difference, I just want to know if it will make enough to be noticable or not.
