Question on setting up a server at home.

Hi folks,

I have 1 PC/1 modem connected to comcast. I came across an older sempron based PC that I've decided to use as a server. Currently, the pc is connected directly to the modem. (no router, straight through)

I would like both of them to share the same internet connection, but I want the older computer to have a public IP address, I am going to be hosting a few games on the older machine and its going to stay on 24/7. (Dont care if the other one has a public or private, its only on when I'm around). People from internet will be connecting to it (as well as me)

How should I set this up? Do I need a router or a switch?

You need a router and you can setup port forwarding to the server to allow people to connect from the internet.

This unit is commonly recommended. I can personally attest that it works very well.

This unit is recommended if you want to get into Draft-N networking now rather than waiting for the standard to be accepted. I've installed 2 of these units and both work superbly.

I suggest staying away from the Linksys WRT54G/GS series. Go for the WRT54GL if you really want custom firmware. The two above are the ones I'd personally stick to though.
