eDIT: LOOK AT LAST POST FOR NEWER QUESTION. (THANK YOU)

hi again!

i look to masters of knowledge within here for enlightenment.
i have a 4700c dell ( i know) anyway, i got the 200gb ata hdd. now the hdd installed is using what i belive to be a sata wire (think thats the correct term) the 200gb hdd came with the older tape (once again i may be incorrectly naming these parts).

the question, (which i think you already know is🙂 can i use both types of cables on this?

or am i better off to go out shopping and getting a sata cable.

(i appreciate the help) allot!!

thanks..

btw: probably gonna head to frys and get either the mb (btwn dfi and msi (?) (cant recall manufacture atm). or... get the case.... (i should get both.. that'll show her!!)

getting closer to picking parts and have been watching allot of the recommendations.

good job guys and a damn nice group of guys if i ever saw one!!

i don't know what you just said. 😛

you can get this if you want to use the SATA cable on a PATA drive (your 200GB if I understood you right)... or if you only have 1 optical drive and have an extra channel open just plug it in there.

You can't use an SATA cable on a PATA drive and vice versa. 🙂

ok i appreciate you looking. Ok i have a 4700c. it came with a 80gb hdd. attached to it there are 2 wires, one is power the other is connected to a sata connector on the mb.

4700 service manual

that wire is a thin one. (not like the flat old school cable that came with the 200gb hdd.)

now ther is a slot (ide) that i can connect to.. the queston is do i? or do i need that adapter or buy the sata wire and connect it to the other open sata connector on the mb?

hope i was able to provide more info.. thanks again!!

edit:
ok looking over the manual that came with the hdd... it says to plug the blue connector to the primary ide port on mb.. ok..that makes sense. but if the original hdd (that came from dell) iis connected to the sata connector.. do i want to do this?

(or did i just buy a hdd for my "new" rig? 🙂

and btw, the 80gb hdd doesnt look like it can use a tape cable (the flat one, on it.

I was planning on setting the hdd to cable select but now... if i use the ide port, i need to make the 200 gb hdd a slave or not the primary one.
(was going to use cable select (or i was) does ... you see my concerns..

and at least when i decide to build my own rig, i will be less of a problem to everyone here.

thanks guys. i apprecate it.

It looks like you only have one IDE PATA channel and I'm assuming your CD/DVD is using it. You can either share your 200GB with it and set it as master while your CD/DVD is the slave or buy the adapter and use the 2nd SATA port.

Hope this helps. 🙂

lol.. ok .. this is making more sense. you are correct. that ide is being used by my dvd r/w and my other dvd player.. hmm ok. so i find one of these adapters and connect it to the ide cable (from the 200gb hdd and connect to the sata port..) is there a hdd that can connect directly to the sata port? (if there is i bet it costs more)
thanks bR for your help!!

oh so you have 2 dvd drives? I guess you have no choice but to get that adapter then.

yes there is a HD that connects directly to the SATA port, it's called an SATA HD 😛 😉 the problem is those drives don't go on sale very often so they're a bit more expensive. 🙁

you don't need to connect the ide cable to the adapter, it snaps on the drive itself and you connect the SATA cable to it and then to the SATA port.

FRY's also sells that same adapter but I think it's $25. when did you get the 200GB? if you can still return it maybe you can just wait for a deal like this @ FRY's again so you can skip all this adapter crap. 😀

wow tuff choice. i got the 200gb in la..(thats where i work). and its 19.00. ok atm i will probably order from newegg. once again many thanks.
(and i need all that hdd space for my kids and their damn ipods...) (how 2 kids, not like the same music and have that many tunes!?!?!?)

didnt feel like driving to san diego..(that and i would have bought something in the 100+ dollar range..

so going to order it from newegg and grab a cable also..(almost forgot about that)

quick question..

ok going to pick up the adapter tonite. and a cable (which i almost forgot!)

do i need to change the jumper on the new 200gb hdd?

i tend to leave the devices cable select..(seems to be safer atm) but it doesnt matter because the 80gb (came with system) is also on a sata connector it doesnt matter, yea?

thanks guys!

Opps airfoil, but the new one is a seagate 200gb hdd ata. so i am getting a adapter so i can use the other sata connector. The ide has a dvd burner and a dvd player on the same cable.

thanks!

You'll notice that the sata cables only have one plug at each end as it's one device per sata socket on the motherboard. This makes jumpers redundant for sata drives as each one is the only device that will be on that cable. If you look at your present sata drive you'll see it doesn't have any jumpers on the back.

You seem to be confused because the seagate drive you are connecting to the sata cable via an adapter has jumpers on it as its a regular pata drive.

I would try cable select to see if it works. Also master might do it as it's the only thing that would be on that cable and would in effect by default be the master drive.

I wouldn't worry too much, if the jumper doesn't work one way, just try it the other. It's unlikely that you'll cause any harm.
