when you run as a service, and if the comp is not connected to the net, and it is usually connected on via modem, will windows dial up networking thingy come out and ask you to connect if dnet client is to retreve some more blocks?

if it is than it is not very 'silent' since i want to run it on my friends comp but they dont know much about comp, i dont wana 'scare' them if the 'please connect to the net' thingy keeps coming up

Set the client to passive mode, aka lurk.
Go to the configuration mode, and select options 2, 6, 9 and 2
This will add the line dialup-watcher=passive to the [networking] section of DNETC.INI

(From the config) "Dial-up detection ONLY mode: Like the previous mode, this will cause the client to automatically send/receive packets when connected. HOWEVER, if the client runs out of packets, it will NOT trigger auto-dial, and will instead work on random RC5 packets until a connection is detected."

So, you should ensure that the client keeps enough blocks to crack until next connection.

To do so, you may want set the fetch threshold to a number of hours of work, instead of a number of blocks : from main menu, select 2 and 12, and set the number of hours.
Note : I don't use this option so I dunnow if it accounts for running hours only, or if it considers time when PC is off, to compute the amount needed.

The client must still listen to the ini-file, except for the silent mode, so if you tell it no to engage in autodail, it shouldn't do that, just because of the reason jou mentioned, this reason is acknowledged( not exactly this, but for administrators that dont't want to see it),and therefore will work this way.

I wish you good luck with it.
