My goal is to gradually build up to a considerable audio system for use with my home studio. This will be almost exclusively for music (monitoring and playback).

If I were to get something like that and connect my m-audio sound card to it digitally, could I then use my Klipsch promedia 2.1 satellites (not the sub with the pre/power amp)?

They got the good ol' red/black wires to connect to the back of the amp, so I don't see why not. Would this work until I got appropriate dedicated speakers?

Yeah, that would work. For sure keep the speakers set to small and the crossover fairly high. I don't remember exactly where Klipsch has set theirs on the promedia set.

Afaik the sats are 4-ohm so keep that in mind too. The 340 shouldn't have a problem with that though as they should be easy to drive to high volumes.

You could use your Promedia sub too by connecting it to the pre-out of the 340 (with an adapter).

Note that you're probably not going to notice a whole lot of difference in sound quality by doing this, but I don't think you should run into any problems.
