Question on RAID1

I've never said up a raid1 config, so I was wondering how you go about setting it up. I have a gigabyte 8ihxp with a built in promise raid chip. It says it supports automatic rebuild of the partition on the drive you want mirrored.

Does that mean, if i set the promise card to raid 1, with a preexisting harddrive, and add a new harddrive to the controller, it will mirror the first drive without me doing anything? Im guessing thats what it means, but I just want to make sure.

Yes, more or less. You may get some prompts at boot-up either informing you of what it's about to do, or asking for input.

I've had to do this twice because of failed drives in the past but it's been so long that I don't remember exactly.

If the drives are identical, make sure you know which contains the data and which is empty.

So pretty much all you have to do, if you have an existing hdd, is set it to raid1 and put another hdd on the controller...and the rest will take care of itself?
