Hey all just picked up a SCSI version which is the DVD-305s and it's kind of loud. Are all these slot load drives kind of on the loud side? Just curious.. Thx!!

Yes. Well, for DVD's they are fine since it's spinning at a lower speed, as well as audio-cd's. But they are kinda noisy for regular cd-rom usage. The Pioneer tray loading models on the otherhand are quiet.

I have the same drive. It is a little louder than my Plextor CD-ROM on data cd's at high speeds. but I do not use the drive for that most of the time. I use it for the special features on DVD movie disks.

The 305S is the earlier generation of DVD player and is very loud. The latest the 106S (ATAPI) is much quieter, less than half as loud as the 305S. I have an all SCSI system and wanted the 305S to keep everything on the SCSI bus, but it's so loud, I traded it in for a 106S. Lower CPU utilization and better performance than the SCSI drive. I never thought I'd use an EIDE/ATAPI device, but it's in the machine and coexists very well. With WinDVD, movies are smooth and it's faster at ripping CDs than the 305. Go figure.
