Question on photo formats

What is the best format to save photographs as? I?m planning on scanning numerous pictures and slides and burning the files on cdr?s for storage. I want to be able to access them and print pictures from the files. What format maintains the ability to print high quality pictures from and has a reasonable file size.

TIF and PNG are both lossless file formats that are good for archiving photos. With the price of CDR's, file size should take a back seat to image quality.
