do they all have the same connector on the back and the only thing that is proprietary is the drive bay cage? I have a compaq laptop that will not spin anymore and am hoping I can just buy any laptop drive. Thanks for any help in advance.
Any 2.5" IDE hard drive with a height of 9.5 millimetres should fit.
The only concern you should have is if your BIOS is able to see the full capacity of any new larger hard drive that you install.
Generally, they are mounted in proprietary carriers/sleds and connectors. Many are modular. I was able to replace mine by going to E-Bay and finding it.
