Question on mixing ATA/66 and ATA/100 drives

I have an ATA/66 drive for my OSs. I'm going to add an ATA/100 drive on IDE 2 to store files, since I've read that's the best way to set up 2 hard drives. If I use an 80 wire cable on IDE 2, will it be possible to run the 100 drive at that speed? This drive will be used for video capture, so I'd like to be able to use the faster data rate.

Yes, it will work as long as your motherboard supports ATA100. ATA66/100/133 all use the same 80-wire cable.

The drive will be slowed down by any optical drive also on ide2.

Hard drive interfaces and standards

You can use a ATA33 drive on a ATA66/100/133 channel and since all current controllers provide independent device timing, they will not affect each other's operation.
