Question on memory on dual socket 1366.

OK< so I have 2 sockets, and each socket has 3 dimm slots. If I only populate the first dimm on each socket, it beeps "no memory detected". If I populate the first (closest) 2 of the 3 dimms with 2 gig sticks (8 gig total) it boots, thinks it has 8 gig, but memtest 4.0 says 6135m memory.

So what is going on here ?

EDIT: NO, bios only saw 6 gig. I moved memory around, using the outer 4 of the 6 slots, and now it sees 8192. Maybe this is why I had slow response on some benchmarks...

A bad memory slot ???

Did you refer to the motherboard manual on how the DIMM slots should be populated?

The slot the manual wants done first is bad. If I put one dimm there, no beeps, but no post. If I leave that and populate the one next to it, I get 2 gig, and it boots(ignoring the memory in slot1a). So then I tried all 3 on the other cpu bank, and now it runs in triple channel mode. Do you think I will take a performance hit, only populating one of the 2 banks ?

Its a Supermicro X8DAL-i. I don't need any more ram. If I get another board and return this, the only contender is extended atx (which I have a case for, but in use) and its $100 more !

So I got this for $200. Question is, am I loosing performance in this config ? if I loose a lot, I shall return it. If its close, its worth it for $110 savings (or more with shipping it back)

Hey Mark, sorry missed your call, was at Red Robin with the fam eating dinner at the time and the wife gave me one of those "oh no you aren't going to answer that are you!?" looks so I slowly put the phone back in my pocket...

regarding RMA...yeah I can understand newegg saying no RMA but what about Supermicro? They don't treat your board any differently just because newegg sold it as open box, do they?

With a dead dimm slot my concern would be "so what else is borked with this board?". The dead-as-doorknob stuff like the dimm is ok, you know it and it was easy to uncover. But the walking-wounded stuff that only comes out and bites you when the board gets hot will just be a debugging nightmare.

If you know you got a dead dimm I'd send the board to the RMA process with the manufacturer, its a server board so expect VIP treatment anyways, and avoid risking killing your cpus and ram in a dodgy mobo.

OK, I ordered this:
ASUS Z8PE-D12(ASMB4-IKVM) Dual LGA 1366
Is there any chance its overclockable ? Regardless I will rma the other one once this comes in. (Open box only allows a return)
