Question on Hydraulic Floor Jacks: Minimum lift/rating for an SUV

Any suggestions on a hydraulic floor jack suitable for lifiting an SUV that has at least 8 inches of Ground clearence? A friend and I just tried to change the brakes on his Explorer and the el cheapo 2 1/2 ton floor jack that he had didn't have sufficient lift to raise it enough to get the wheels of the ground.

2 and 1/2 should have worked
my buddy has a cheap 2 and 1/2 jack and it does take effort but we were able to lift up his dodge ram v8 4x4

A good 3 ton jack can def lift any car/truck that you'll ever own

We were lifting the car up by the front (behind bumper) jacking point. At maximum elevation, the jack would not allow the wheels to clear the ground making it unpossible to remove the wheels. We had jack stands under the two side lift points for safety.

I use a piece of an old railroad tie on top of an old 3 ton jack. It's heavy and sturdy and I don't have to fully-extend the jack to lift my truck.

Just remember: never rely solely on the jack. Always use good jack stands before crawling under a vehicle. And do make sure you chock the tires to keep it from rolling. You'd be surprised the number of people who omit that step. 🙂
