question on getting more ram

After using vista for awhile, i've realized 2gb is not enough. If i have more than a couple things open, and a game running, i run out pretty quick.

Right now i am using 64-bit vista, so more than 3.2gb is not an issue.

I currently have a 2x1gb set of crucial ballistix pc-8500.

My question is, should I just go ahead and get another 2x1gb kit,

or sell my current sticks and get a 2x2gb kit?

I would like to keep my nice memory, but i am concerned that filling all 4 slots on my motherboard will limit my over clock? I am at 3.0ghz with my e6600 on a p5w-dh deluxe.

Any ideas?

Sell your super-fast sticks and get 2x2GB. Why did you get DDR2-1066 with an E6600?

You have an expensive and super fast memory but you did not utilize its full potential. It is like buying a $70K race car and driving it on a school zone speed limit road. Sell that super fast memory and buy a cheap 2 x 2GB DDR2 800.

This was what i was thinking, but what about future proofing myself?

couldn't i just use my nice ram for my next build?

and, if i plan on upgrading next winter, will ddr3 be in heavy use yet? will my ddr2 still be useful? say if i were to buy 8gb of the adata?

Then you'll have to buy 2 more "super fast" sticks b/c all ram will run at speed of slowest stick.

Depends on what CPU multiplier you have on your next build, assuming that the next build is a C2D or a quad C2D (Nehalem, which is the next generation CPU will be released next year and will utilize DDR3; thus, rendering your DDR2 useless).

A stock DDR2 800MHz will run with a base Front Side Bus (FSB) of 400MHz. If your CPU multiplier is x9 (e.g E8400), then theoretically you can OC your CPU to 3.6 GHz (400 x 9 = 3.6 GHz) without the need of OCing the memory. Keep in mind that DDR2 800 can readily be OCed to higher speed too.

What is this "future proofing"? It appears to be a concept alien to computer hardware.

The future is very different to the present - indeed, often more different than we can currently imagine or comprehend.

Probably within the next year and a half or so as Intel rolls out lots more processors that use it.
