Question on DVR to PC

I am in the market to purchase a DVR and was wondering if they can be connected to PCs so that I could transfer my taped stuff on svcd or dvd. I think I am going to get the replaytv and will use it without the subscription at first but then eventually subscribe.
 
I don't think you can use it without a subscription. I would get one if I could use it like a vcr, and no sub. Please correct me if i'm wrong.
 
I read that you can use replaytv as a regular vcr...just all the settings are manual then. and no special features that come with the subscription.
 
very interesting...havent had a chance to read everything but i knew someone would have the time to make this work. looks a little complicated and i am not sure if i am ready for it. good information though
