i have a vp6, and i'm thinking of buying one p3 900 atm, and my question is, do i have to buy same stepping for smp???

or can i buy any 900mhz p3??

thanks

Same stepping would be desirable. I believe some OS's will not install if the CPUs are more than one stepping apart. Reality check: when I upgraded from a dual P3 733 to an AthlonXP 1466MHz (same total MHz) the real-world performance of the system in daily office-type use jumped a great deal, so keep the big picture in view too.

Here is the P3 S-Spec list to help identify your stepping: S-Spec list You can determine the S-Spec of your existing CPU by using Intel's utility here.
