When it is recommended that I should keep my back straight, does it mean that my back should be vertical, like perpendicular to the floor?

Or if can I keep my back straight, but slightly leaning forward? I tried to keep my torso perpendicular to the floor, but I always feel like I'm in danger of keeling over backwards

I think it's quite impossible to do it with your back vertical for the very reason you just listed :)

Straight but angled is fine. Pivot at your hips when you angle though, and not by curving your back (hence the straight back thing)

Just keep your back straight as in stiff. The natural tendency is to lean forward which is a good thing.

I believe you're suppose to arch your back, but not round your back. Lean forward as necessary on the descend.
