really?
:Q

what makes it the better buy? it certainly isn't blindingly faster nor is it's SM3.0 important.

The fact that it uses less power, is single slot and cheaper after rebate?

none of those concerns are very important as most 300w PSes can handle an x850xt, it exhausts the hot air out of the case and is much cheaper before rebate.

Plus the x850xt is sometimes faster than the 7600GT in Oblivion:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2746&p=7

So the x850xt is sometimes faster than a 7600gt and that makes it the better buy? Or are you just saying the 7600gt isn't such the clear cut winner? They perform about the same, so why not pick the one that has advantages in other areas regardless of whether or not they are utilized to their potential?

Lower power consumption is always better no matter how you spin it.

I guarantee the x850xt is louder than the evga 7600gt.

A single slot cooler, I would imagine, is a better choice for the OP if he had lots of pci components.

It's up to the OP if he trusts rebates, so that is not a factor for us to argue.

So, what makes the x850xt the better choice?

i am just replying to the ridiculous post you made:

the GT is not not necesarily a better buy as . . . 1) it is more expensive before rebate; 2) x850xt is faster in Oblivion in 2/3 benchs and ties in the 3rd; 3) Finally some of don't care about a few watts or that extra slot . . . your case will definitely be cooler with the xt. . . . and it is only 'noisy' on start up.

and the OP specifically says he prefers ati 😛

😀

that's what makes it a better buy 😉

Well first off, that's not my quote. That is someone else.

Second, I think you praising ATI as the better buy is just as ridiculous as him quoting the 7600gt is the better buy.

So ATI losing by 1 frame is a tie, but it beating Nvidia by 2 frames is a win?

And what is with you and Oblivion. The OP says he plays WOW. Do you want me to cherry pick benchmarks too?

I don't mean to come across rude, but you sound just as ridiculous as the person you originally quoted.

feel free to cherry pick . . . the x850xt is not at all embarassed to hang with the 7600GT.

as to my MIS-quoting you as someone else . . . . sorry.

and you appear to be blind as well as rude - the OP clearly states:

Oops, didn't see that Oblivion part, I apologize for that.

I never said the 7600gt would beat a x850xt, but you seem hard pressed to try to prove it the other way around. As I have stated before, you declare a difference of 2 frames as a victory, but 1 as a tie.

I've never even stated anything about the performance, other than they would perform about the same, but merely pointed out differences in other areas such as cooling and power consumption.

I'm questioning your objectiveness and that's it. You can check mine in every other thread, but I know where you stand already.

You questioned why SpeedZealot369 said the 7600gt would be a better buy, I gave you possible reasons as to why it would be a better solution, but you cherry pick what is important for the OP and what is not (rebates, power consumption, 2 slots, etc).

what is important to you may not be at all important to the OP . . .

Power is minor to anyone with a decent PS, the xt with it's dual slot keeps the PC's case cooler -great for O/Cers . . . and performance is similar. Yet you dismiss ALL my reasons with a call of fanboism.

and in the 1st Bench, the x850xt beats the 7600GT by 36.5 to 30.3 [Significantly]

in the second bench the GT trails the XT by 2.1 [minor] and loses by 7/10ths of a Frame in the 3rd [very minor].

Performance speaks for itself . ..and everyone knows where you stand also. 😛

Sure everyone does. And everyone knows it isn't green.

All your reasons aren't due to you being a fanboy of Ati, as facts are objective. But you cherry picking things is. I ask again why 2 frames is a victory while 1 is a tie?

But enought of that. Is me questioning your objectiveness going to just make you project it onto me? Or can you actually see my biases in my post?

It seems as though ever since a reknown member left, this place has turned bloody red.

for the LAST TIME it is NOT 2 frames vs 1 . . . the 7600GT is SIX frames slower than the x850xt in the first bench - MUCH slower . . . 2 frames lower in the 2nd - minor relatively . . . and 7/10ths of a frame faster in the last one.

You either have a reading problem or cannot see anything but red . 😛

now YOU go ahead and cherry-pick me some benchs

if you can 😉

"it is faster in Oblivion in 2/3 benchs and ties in the 3rd"

Now, do you have a reading comprehension problem? Or do you not get what I'm saying? Or are you just trying to go off on a tagent?

We are talking about that quote there.

You say 2 victories and a tie. The 2nd bench is a victory to you, but the 3rd is a tie?

Well the x850xt IS significantly faster in the first of Anand's benchmarks, a little faster in the second and slightly slower in the third.

Do you agree with that [clarification] . . . so far?

Nothing i said was in error . . . that 7/10 of a frame . . . 80 vs 79.3 is close enough to be a 'tie' . . . within 2% . . . otoh 36 vs 30 is significant

or do you not get what i am saying?

EDIT: LAST clarification - from my PM'd reply to you:

i lumped all three benchs together and i stand by my statement . . . the x850xt - according to 3 of Anand's benchmarks is faster in 2 and ties in one - technically its "slightly slower" [almost a statistical tie of less than 2%].

and it isn't a "simple 2 fps vs 1"

in the 2nd bench the x850xt 'wins' by 59.1 to 57

in the 3rd the GT wins by 80 to 79.3 - a much SMALLer percentage

i can't explain it any better 😛

Of course you can't explain that any better, as what you are explaining, does not explain my question. But good try nontheless.

didn't we settle this in the PMs?
:Q

and agreed to disagree .. .. 😛

i generalized by lumping all 3 of anand's benchs together and gave a quick summary - i.e. the x850 wins in 2 and ties in 1 - that might have been a little careless.

i should have said the X850xt SLAUGHTERS the 7600GT in the first bench, is ~ 4% [or slightly faste]r in the second and barely loses [by ~1-1/2 percent] in the third

would that be better?

i hope the OP doisn't think video is like this all the time

it's usually much worse 😛
😀

at least we both know we aren't affiliated with ATi or nVidia . . .
[after reading this thread, Hi-road or AEG wouldn't take either of us] 😛
:brokenheart:

First off, thanks for all the advice, as it has been very helpful.

How would a x800XT far at 1440x900 Resolution? I was planning on using 1280x1024... but a deal just popped up that is too hard to resist 😀. Although I would rather not do this, I could increase my price range to around $200 if the x800XT isn't capable of good performance at this resolution. So please give me more advice on cards for this resolution if the one I have planned for doesn't work well 🙂.

not so good

unless you just want to play older games 😛

you now need a x1800xt or 7900gt 😉

at least
:Q

figure ~$250 new . . . or something in the FS/T

EDIT: OOPs . . . that's widescreen . . . my mistake . . . 14x9 is not much more demanding than 12x10 . . . you might still squeak by with a x850xt . . . but if it were ME, i'd go for a beefier GPU. 😉

You just brightened my day like non other 😛. Ok, thanks! If ~250 new, probably can get one for ~200 used. 🙂

Thanks guys for all the help.

How does the X1900GT compare to the x1800XT? I've never went to this type of resolution before, so if it is a must to have a x1800xt or comparable card, what other options would there be? Would there be a much difference between the xl and xt at this resolution?

are you ready to buy right now? . . . if so, i'd suggest you start a search right now to see what is in your price range . . . this WS resolution is not much more demanding than your 10x12 . . . it's really pretty close.

i'd pick the x1800xt simply because it is disontinued and being discounted - right now - and will give a substantial performance boost over the x850xt . . . of course the x1900 is better still but is new . . . and the x1950 will soon be out . . . 😛

what is best bang-for-buck depends on 'when' you are ready to buy and what is "available" . . . . when you are ready, check Hot Deals at least twice-a-day an have you CC "ready".😉

goodluck and please let us know what you finally get.

Although I am an ATI man, I found a 256mb evga 7800 gtx that is supposed to clock to KO speeds for $215. I'm in the proccess of looking to purchase it and seeing if it is a card that is recommened. What card in ATIs line would be comparable to it? Thanks again for the help.

I could choose between this and a X1800XT for $190.

Any of those would be fine. The x1800xt is a better deal though.

I have dual monitors so I'm inclined to say the 7800gtx. But the x1800xt would give you better performance for the money.

7800GTX deal in the "Hot Deals" forum might be a good choice...

When apoppin means beefier than x800xt, he also means beefier than 7800GT 🙂 If you are spending that much more money, you better get something tangible from it! I would look for a used x1800xt at the least, or a 7900GT. $200 used probably won't happen, but it might 🙂

Nat

*Sorry, missed the second page! Sounds like you are on the right track though...

Where did you see the x1800xt for $190? 😛 PM me if you want...

Yesterday I saw an open box for 199 on newegg. I would be purchasing this one, an OEM, from a forum user who bought it from newegg a few days ago and doesn't want to pay restocking fees, or something like that. Is the 7800GTX much better for dual monitors than the x1800xt?
