question on component inputs on tv

i have this tv http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/Plasma/PDP-42A3HD

recently the hdmi port fried, and i cant replace the tv till after Christmas.

the tv has a component ypbpr input

I want to buy a hdmi to ypbpr converter

the issue is that they all convert to 1080.

my tv is 720, will it autoscale it down to 720 or am i wasting my money?

Some people actually prefer the PQ of component over that of HDMI. I have never noticed much of a difference except that the picture seems a little brighter with component. You lose anything more than stereo sound, though.
