Question on Cellphone and SIM card

Well my contract is finally up from Cingular. I am currently using a 2-3 year old Motorolla V400. I am just confuse that if I buy a cellphone, not from Cingular. Could I use the SIM card from this old phone on the "unlocked" phone that I purchase? I am just confused because of this whole 3G network yada yada. I got my SIM card before this whole 3G network thing, so I am not sure if my card will be compatible with the newer phones. Thanks for any input.

yes you can.. but the problem i have run into.. is that my V505 has a 32Kb SIM chip and the new phones are 64Kb (larger simchip).

I dont know if there are any adaptor.. but you can just switch simchips and the phones will work.

I am not sure what you mean by switch simchip? Each phone comes with 1 Simcard.

ie, with my old quad band phone (unlocked), I could put any sim chip in the phone and use that account. Among other things, handy(and cheaper) for international travelers.

It isnt physically larger. It will still work. The 64k just holds more contacts.

You can always go buy a new SIM card from any Cingular store if you need a newer card. As long as you have an active account, they'll just deactivate your old card and activate the new one.
