Question on cell phone service contracts

I am finally to the point where I am needing a cell phone, however, I am not sure I want to be locked into a year long contract. If I bought a used phone off eBay or wherever that was compatible with the service carrier that I want to use, will I be able to avoid being bound to a contract?

Most if not all providers will require at least a one year contract.

Verizon has a pay as you go plan with no contract. Checkit out.

Yes you can use cell phones without contract but it will be way too expensive. I think virgin is out with a deal with no contract useage but they have some minimum like $20 monthly useage. If you are not going to use the phone a hell lot buy something like that else get one with a contract. Its the best time to get now.

Thanks for the info.. In that case, I'll probably just go with a typical plan.
