Hey everyone

I have a couple of general questions; first off I have been trying to burn a couple of iso files to a Memorex CD-R and many times after burning them and trying to install them or run the program off of the CD and I continue to into problems of not being able to install or run programs off of them, I was able however to run the program once I had burn it to a Sony CD-R and it ran flawless. I am using a LiteOn CD DVD burner, so my question is that as I have heard from other places does it matter what type of ?dye? that is used to make a CD-R and if so what is the best for both manufacture and brand name. Also I find that the Memorex DVD-R?s work great and last for years.

Second Question is what are some of the recommended programs to burn ISO files. I am currently using Nero and DVD Decrepter.

Finally I am going to be looking into buying a new DVD burner any suggestions?

And if there are links to where this is discribed please post.

Thanks for any and all comments in advance.

Quality of media is important, although I've found this to be more a factor with DVDs than CDs. As far as burning ISO's, using Nero is fine. I would suggest burning ISO's at the slowest speed it will allow.

I have read various negative comments about Memorex media, both DVDs and CDs. I'm sure some ATers will say they've had good luck with memorex, so I'd say go by your personal experience. By the sound of it, you haven't had good luck with Memorex CD-Rs.

It could be that you're trying to make copies of CD-ROMs that have been copy-protected. If that's your problem, you'll need special software that can read the discs properly. I use Alcohol 120% and that works fine.

Or it could be a hardware problem, in which case the media and drive are for whatever reason incompatible. You can get around that by using a data verification sequence after you burn a disc. I don't know how to do that except by using Nero, in which case you simply check a box marked "data verification."

You can also get around a hardware problem by using software to virtually mount a disc image. Again, I use Alcohol 120% for this, although I do believe Nero and many other programs have that function (though it is often limited).

I'm pretty sure you can't burn a CD image to a DVD.

I don't understand why people don't just use Verbatim DVDs/CDs. They're top notch quality, and you can find them almost anywhere that sells DVDs/CDs. They don't cost THAT much more than stuff like Memorex, and they're much higher quality. Rather than take a chance with the no-name brand on-sale media, just get something that'll work all the time.

Also, I doubt you need a new DVD burn as LiteOn DVD burners are pretty good burning wise. Unless it's incredibly old, it probably won't burn much worse than a new burner.

As for looking for a new burner, if you really want one, head over to CDFreaks. They have reviews on burning quality of many of the popular burners.

There are many, many badged brands of media, but really only about a dozen manufacturers in the world. Among the very top is Taiyo Yuden (and I believe they make Verbtim products)
