I'm puting together a new system for a buddy. It has a tdk burner 48 16 48. It took 7:39 minutes to burn a 600mb cd. From what I remember my Lite-on 24 16 48 is faster or at least as fast. Is this hype that the newer cd burners are faster because it says 48x? We are both useing Win98se. His rig is faster than mine so what's up?

7:39? That seems a bit high. It takes about 2:30 to burn a CD on my 40x burner.

Should be about 2:00 for you. Remember that it doesn't burn at a constant 48x.

I loaded a .cue of a .bin file that was a game about 600mb. Clean install and everything is updated. Could the .cue be the reason for slow down?

Ive acually found a chart before on the web that showed burn time for 650 - 700mb (full cd) to be as following:

1x = 1 hour
2x = 30mins
4x = 15mins
8x = about 8 mins
16x = 4mins
32x = 2 - 3 mins ......
so this would leave 48 and 52x to be somewhere around 1 - 1 1/2 min. (which doesnt sound right)

Im pretty sure this isnt acurate considering like chaotic said "doesnt burn at a constant **x", and all drives & media benchmark differently.

Oops I forgot to enable dma and now it took 3:37 for a 700mb cd. Also the cd media says 48x but during test was only good for 32x which makes since on low speed. Thanks for reply.

DMA enabled on the drive?

Media rated at the speed you are trying to burn at?

Is the application set to burn at that speed?

My 40X does a 700MB CD in less than half that time.
