Question on buying Windows XP OS

I want to make a disclaimer that I'm not encouraging pirating or any type of illegal activities.

The last 3 rig I've built I bought the Windows XP OEM. It gets kind of tedious as the $$ adds up when I build more rigs. Is there a way I can avoid this, for instance can I use one CD-KEY for another computer or are there other alternatives.

for file sharing, you cant use xp home on several pcs in your home. you can on pro. but remember, i dont know if its legal or not.

ubuntu linux is easy, too easy to set up on a machine. everything is gui-fied, so you shouldn't have trouble configuring any of the services that you need.

That is probably the best newb distro out there right now, besides a liveCD. Give it a try and see what you think.

The simple answer is you can install your copy of windows on another computer. It will work, but you will be using the software illegally. You need to have a license for each computer. That being said, im sure 99% of people with one license use it on a few computesr.

I think you statistics are off. I know that of my family, we have 5 computers and 7 licenses (One on linux, one my brother bought because he hated the HP Restore partition crap).

Im sure they are. Im just saying its a very common practice for people to buy one license for 2+ computers.

That does'nt look very GUI to me brudda...Plus intalling the drivers is another bitch which you did'nt cover.

I would tend to disagree with ya budman... on this specific issue.

Ubuntu is a very thorough/stable version of linux. As a matter of fact, i believe its the highest downloaded linux on distrowatch right now. If linux is a possibility, then i would run ubuntu, since i do at home.

You can use it at home, just have to have more than 1 license. You could do it with only 1 license, but it would be illegal.

Trouble with your english skills? This is another case of the OP looking for a way of 'cheating' the system. Another who wants to pay for XP once and use it on multiple systems. Well I want to pay for one processor and get several.. Not a bad idea, no? I want a few cars, so I'll just go buy one, and drive three or four home.

Second sentence is pretty clear.. I've never seen XP Pro with activation. I guess that's just because I'm lucky. Anyway to differentiate between pro/corp other then the fact that activation isn't there?

Do you run a volume license copy of Pro at home? Or do you just use Home at home?
