Question on ASUS P4PE EEE1394 support

I am strongly considering this board since I want a board with firewire to use for video editing. The Anandtech review of this board states

"ASUS also goes ahead and adds some FireWire to the mix. This is powered by VIA's VT6307 chip, which supports up to two FireWire ports. There are two red FireWire headers located at the bottom of the motherboard to use. However, we're still wondering why ASUS didn't just use a VIA VT6306 FireWire chip (found on the ASUS A7V8X) instead, since it supports an additional FireWire port. "

I am wondering if I need to buy additional hardware to get the firewire working on the board or does the "header" terminate in a port? I have a Antec case that has USB and firewire ports on the front so will this work?

Any experiences with the board welcome.
Thanks.

I am about to build a system using that same board - the P4PE/L/1394/SATA. I presently have 3 1394 ports and 2 USB 2 ports in back of my old system. Also got the Antec tower with connectors infront - but I prefer hubs on my desk. The tower is under the desk on the floor, so any ports, front or back are not as convenient as hub ports. Plus, I like the external power with the hubs so that no added load is placed on the system itself.

Every one I have talked to so far that has this board (that has credibility) likes it. Check with PastorJay on the Motherboard forum.

If you look at the enlarged pics of this board, it shows the two 1394 ports on the backplane. With the hub, all I need is one.

To use the front ports on the Antec, you will probably have to get a cable to link them to the mobo pins that are there for that purpose.

Just downloaded the P4Pe manual in PDF format. It's good to print in color and put in a looseleaf binder in plastic page inserts. It is better than what comes with the mobo. 🙂

The 1394 cable on my Antec reaches the Firewire port just fine on my P4PE. The board I got (the "Cadillac version") came with a card and 2 cables to pipe the 1394 out back if you want to go that route.
