Question on arranging DDR rams on a 4-channel motherboard

Hi all,

Probably a newbie question but here it is:

I have 2 sticks of 512mb DDR 3200 of the same make/model, and 2 sticks of 256mb DDR 2100 of the same make/model. Now I've heard that dual channel is faster performance-wise, so I will put one 512mb on the first socket, and the other 512mb on the third socket.

But i'm not sure if dual channel has a bottle-neck problem, say, between socket 1 and 2, or 3 and 4. In another word, if i install 256mb on socket 2 and 4, will it make my motherboard slower because PC2100 is the bottleneck of PC3200, or do socket 1/3 and 2/4 operate independently from each other?

Second part of my question is: do i need to change anything in BIOS for dual channel to take effect, or it only depends on physical set-up?

Thank you all very much!

its not really going to matter at that point when you mix 2100 and 3200. your best bet is just use the the2x512 3200 and yes 1st dimm slot then 3rd dimm slot.
