Does you need the specific HSF you bought with your boxed cpu

for example...if I am buying a retail cpu but have a opteron heatpipe HSF from another chip will this work for warranty purposes??

does the hsf fan have a serial number on it???

I dont know for sure but what I understand is you DO need the retail hsf that came with the cpu. It has a specific serial # on it that you need. Again, ive never done an rma this is what ive heard though.

I just rma'd an opteron 170. I had the retail hsf that came with it and sent it back, but I did not see a serial number on it. Maybe I just didn't notice it, but there wasn't a sticker or anything. I didn't pay much attention cos I bought it sealed anyway.

YMMV

I have been meaning to join, and this thread provided the incentive.

I assume it would be the same in the US, and here in NZ, AMD DO require that the stock HSF is returned with the CPU. So clean that AS5 off first.....

That is what I was told by my local supplier (I asked about this last week actually). He wasnt sure what AMD would say if it was returned all "Shiny New" lookin.

But does it have to be the same HSF...I guess I will need to look over the HSF more closely

does it contain a serial number?

or could I sell an extra one I have and use a HSF from a different opteron

If you read the manual that comes with the CPU, it states that you MUST use the supplied HSF to retain the 3-yr warranty. And each HSF comes with a unique S/N.

Just make sure you keep the retail HSF and return it with the CPU if you ever need to use that warranty.

on the warranty note, Im wondering if anyone has gotten away with RMA'ing an OC'd CPU? Not an issue for me, but a mate is wondering about this, before I go ahead and OC his new system (hopefully it will arrive today).

Dont worry, he will be involved too, but Im just about more keen for his new rig than he is.

MOst see that as unethical especially if he damaged it do to ocing (like high vcore and toasty heat)....

That being said there is really no way for them to really tell 100%, and if there was I dont think it warrants the cost of the chip to them anyways...

Now if you removed the IHS then they would be quite suspicious...likely wouldn't warranty it

Yeah, the IHS is staying on. Im not saying that its likely that will happen, im not intending damaging anything, gonna be much more cautious with this than I would if it were mine.

And yes, it would be unethical, hence I have no plans of doing it myself.
